Andrew J. Sproul Papers, . 1845-1890

Andrew J. Sproul (fl. 1845-1865) was an immigrant from Ireland who settled in Ohio in 1851. During the Civil War he served in the 16th Ohio Regiment, United States Army, at Vicksburg, Miss., and elsewhere on the lower Mississippi River. The collection includes letters received by Sproul from members of his family in Ireland, concerning family and neighborhood affairs, crops, prices, and other matters; letters, 1861-1863, from Sproul to his wife while he was serving in the 16th Ohio Regiment concerning camps, neighborhoods, comrades, fighting, and attitudes of some Union soldiers; miscellaneous accounts and memoranda; and a few photographs. rebel
